How Leaders Get Stuck in “The Shit We Make Up” and Avoid Taking Action.

As leaders, we often have a lot on our plates. We’re responsible for making decisions, setting goals, and motivating our teams. It can be easy to get caught up in the day-to-day and lose sight of our long-term goals.

Sometimes, we can get so caught up in the details that we forget to take a step back and see the big picture. We start to make up stories about why we can’t achieve our goals. We tell ourselves that we’re not good enough, that we don’t have enough time, or that the odds are stacked against us.

These stories can become very real to us, and they can prevent us from taking action. We get stuck in the “stuff we make up” and we never even try to achieve our goals.

So how can we break free from the “stuff we make up” and start taking action? Here are six tangible strategies:

  1. Identify your limiting beliefs. What are the stories you tell yourself about why you can’t achieve your goals?
  2. Check your limiting beliefs against the actual circumstances of the situation, how much of your thinking is true?
  3. What would you have to think differently to get unstuck?
  4. Check in with yourself about the result you are looking for. How are your feelings and thinking supporting you? Or not? Check in with yourself again about what you would have to feel or think differently to support your result.
  5. Now decide what action to take, even if it’s just a small step. Don’t wait for the perfect moment to act. Just start taking steps towards your goals, even if they’re small steps. If, you find yourself getting stuck in M.S.U. land it is time to work through steps 1-5 again.
  6. Celebrate your successes. When you achieve a goal, take the time to celebrate your success. This will help you stay motivated and keep moving forward. Make sure to celebrate the journey as well as the destination.

Getting unstuck is not easy, but it is possible. By following these strategies, you can start to break free from the “Shit we make up” and start taking action towards your goals.
